Mr. Biden has so far created five national monuments and expanded two others, part of his pledge to conserve 30 percent of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030. Last year, Mr. Biden gave a national monument designation to half a million acres of the Spirit Mountain area in southern Nevada. To date, Mr. Biden has preserved more than 41 million acres of land and waters. The San Gabriel monument encompasses 342,177 acres of the Angeles National Forest and 4,002 acres of neighboring San Bernardino National Forest. The expanded national monument includes a unique scenic railroad, grand recreation resorts and Nike missile facilities that date from the Cold War.

For one, the word can be taken as a reality check against a prominent idea concerning language. Psychologists have since shown repeatedly that differences in how languages’ vocabularies label experience do condition very small differences in thought patterns. In Russian, for instance, there is not one word for blue, but two: one for darker blue and one for lighter blue. No experiment has demonstrated that differences in language affect our minds so profoundly as to result in significantly different world views. It is culture — i.e., reality — that does that, not the specifics of how narrowly or broadly a word happens to apply.

When Haley Omeasoo used her forensics expertise to launch a nonprofit aimed at assisting the families of missing and murdered Indigenous people, the name Ohkomi Forensics seemed fitting. The 27-year-old said she went into forensic anthropology specifically so she could help the families of missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP), including those she knew on her own reservation. That's where Omeasoo hopes Ohkomi Forensics can come in. Chaos erupted at the gathering as a single shot was fired in events recorded by bystanders' cell phones and a surveillance camera. The appeal of the detention order argues that bail was denied arbitrarily in a decision that stems from “false narratives” and insufficient evidence. Prosecutors say they expect the pretrial detention order to be upheld. Lidyard authorized a trial and denied bail for Martinez after nearly five hours of court testimony and a review of video evidence. Lidyard also highlighted testimony that Martinez appeared to be converting semi-automatic guns at home into automatic weapons.

New Mexico resident Ryan Martinez, 23, who was taken into custody as the suspected shooter, is seen in this undated handout. New Mexico State Police/Handout via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsSept 29 (Reuters) - A New Mexico man was charged with attempted murder for shooting a demonstrator at a protest over plans to reinstall a statue of a Spanish conquistador outside a civic complex in northern New Mexico, police said. Twenty-three-year-old Ryan Martinez of Sandia Park was arrested on Thursday after he shot a 42-year-old man while attempting to disrupt the peaceful protest outside county offices in Espanola, state police said in a statement. The bronze was taken down in 2020 during nationwide anti-racism protests to topple monuments to European colonizers and Confederate officials. The wounded man, a Hopi Native man from Seattle, Washington, was in critical condition at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque awaiting surgery, said Mateo Peixinho, an organizer for the protest rally.

New Mexico resident Ryan Martinez, 23, was taken into custody as the suspected shooter after leaving the event in a car, said Rio Arriba County sheriff's office Major Lorenzo Aguilar. A Hopi Native American man from Seattle, Washington, was shot, according to Peixinho. The county halted the reinstallation of 16th-century Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate's statue planned for Thursday after protests over the return of the bronze figure, removed three years ago during nationwide anti-racism demonstrations. The Santa Fe New Mexican showed a picture of a man at the protest it identified as Martinez wearing a red MAGA hat. Onate is known for the 1599 massacre of a pueblo tribe, leading a group of Spanish settlers into what is now New Mexico.

‘War Against the Children’

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

These gaps have led Native American police Reuters met with to take matters into their own hands, some forming their own missing units. Driven by decades of Native American activism, data showing the scale of the crisis, and the appointment of the United States' first ever Native American cabinet secretary Deb Haaland, the issue of missing indigenous people entered the U.S. mainstream in the last five years. MORE AT RISKFactors ranging from poverty and a history of colonial oppression make Native American people disproportionately at risk of going missing. REUTERS/Adria Malcolm“Very few tribes have the funds and staff available to make MMIWR a priority,” said Darlene Gomez, an Albuquerque lawyer who represents families in 17 missing Native American cases. Families of victims and their lawyers say police routinely blame missing Native American women for their own disappearance due to factors such as substance abuse — and it’s not just outsiders.

And yet, the Grand Canyon remains yoked to the present in one key respect. The Colorado River, whose wild energy incised the canyon over millions of years, is in crisis. Down beneath the tourist lodges and shops selling keychains and incense, past windswept arroyos and brown valleys speckled with agave, juniper and sagebrush, the rocks of the Grand Canyon seem untethered from time. The Grand Canyon is a planetary spectacle like none other — one that also happens to host a river that 40 million people rely on for water and power. At Mile 0 of the Grand Canyon, the river is running at around 7,000 cubic feet per second, rising toward 9,000 — not the lowest flows on record, but far from the highest.
